Trio Concertante is a virtuoso work for piano trio in three parts, each containing two sub-movements. The third part contains a cadenza in the manner of a romantic violin concerto.

Trio Concertante Programme Notes 「トリオ・コンチェルタンテ」曲目解説

Trio Concertante was a long time in the making. The first ideas began life as part of a piano concerto that I started writing after completing Concerto Grosso in 2003. However, the writing process hit a brick wall. The incomplete piano concerto languished for many years in a folder on my computer before circumstances allowed me to restart work on it in late 2018. Getting a piano concerto performed seemed improbable, so the fragments were rescored for piano trio. With new instrumentation and a new narrative behind the piece, writing proceeded rapidly in late 2018 and into 2019. Trio Concertante was completed in June 2019.

Trio Concertante is a programmatic work in three parts, with each part containing two sub-movements. The piece recalls a major life decision. Part I begins with a mise en scène (Adagio maestoso) that sets the stage for the story to follow. If the first theme of the second sub-movement (Allegro moderato) is somewhat banal, then it is deliberately so – after all, this is a story of everyday life. The various episodes of the Allegro moderato, which are of contrasting character and somewhat unsettled, are a premonition of what is to come. The first sub-movement of Part II, Lento, is the calm before the storm. The relentless second sub-movement, Presto agitato, is when the stressful reality of the situation sinks in. Part III begins with a contemplative recitative and Andante melody. A decision needs to be made. The dilemmas are worked through in a violin cadenza, which reaches a resolute conclusion. But this decision is not without cost. The Coda (also Andante) mourns what must be sacrificed, before the piece ends in a resounding E major – life goes on, and all is well that ends well.

On a compositional level, Trio Concertante is built around semitones – indeed, an early working title of the piece reflected its chromaticism. In addition to many chromatic scale flourishes, there are important melodies all in semitones, the Presto agitato is almost a passacaglia over a chromatic scale bass, and the main melody in Part III is built around a chromatic alto line. Ultimately, however, Trio Concertante was named for its concerto-like elements. All three instruments have passages requiring considerable virtuosity; the origins of the Presto agitato as part of a piano concerto can be heard in the piano vs strings motifs; and then of course there is the violin cadenza inspired by the great nineteenth century violin concertos. Trio Concertante was not conceived simply as a neo-romantic piece inspired by many composers from Schubert (1797-1828) to Shostakovich (1906-1975). It was also intended to be a “performers’ piece” that allows the three soloists to display the full extent of their technical and lyrical abilities.

Trio Concertante is a highly personal work. The opening notes played by the violin and cello are my musical signature S (E flat) – E – A – ton (up a tone), thus signifying the piece’s autobiographical nature. There are many other coded references within the music to the events that inspired the work. These, however, will remain spoken only in music. Ultimately, I hope that listeners will hear in the piece echoes of times in their own lives of struggles that were overcome, of necessary decisions that were taken, and of a resolution to move forward positively with life, even if at times there are lingering twinges of regret.

「トリオ・コンチェルタンテ」の完成には、長い時間を要しました。この作品の当初の構想は、2003年に「コンチェルト・グロッソ」を仕上げた後に書き始めたピアノ協奏曲の一部として始まりました。しかし、曲作りに取り組むうちに、私は壁にぶつかってしまいました。未完成のピアノ協奏曲は、2018年末に私が再度取り組める状況になるまで、PC内のフォルダの中に何年にも亘って放置されていたのです。ピアノ協奏曲の演奏まで漕ぎ着けることは現実的ではないように思われたので、私はその断片をピアノトリオ曲として書き直すことにしました。新たな楽器編成と作品の背景にある新たな物語のおかげで、2018年末から2019年にかけて、作曲は急速に進み、2019年6月に「トリオ・コンチェルタンテ」は完成を迎えました。

「トリオ・コンチェルタンテ」は3部から成る標題音楽で、それぞれ2つの小楽章が含まれます。本作は、人生の大きな決断を思い起こさせるように書きました。第1部は、ミザンセーヌ、即ちこの作品の物語が展開していく舞台として、ゆったりと荘厳な（Adagio maestoso）音楽で始まります。もし第2小楽章の第1主題（Allegro moderato）がやや平凡に感じられるなら、これは意図してそうしたものです。結局のところ、この作品は日常の物語を描いているわけなのですから。その後のAllegro moderatoの様々なエピソードは、これとは対照的な性質で、どこか落ち着かないものですが、この後の出来事を予感させます。第２部の第1小楽章（Lento）は、嵐の前の静けさを、激しい第2小楽章（Presto agitato）は、ストレスに満ちた現実世界が身に染みる様子を描いています。第3部は、瞑想的でささやくような独唱（recitativo）と、Andanteの旋律で始まり、やがて決断の時を迎えます。頭を悩ませていたジレンマは、バイオリンの独奏（cadenza）よって解決され、確固たる結論に至ります。しかし、この結論には犠牲が伴っているのです。コーダ（こちらもAndante）は、犠牲にせざるを得ないものを嘆いた後、最後は鳴り響くホ長調で締め括られます。人生は続き、終わりよければすべてよし、ということを表現しているのです。

作曲の観点からは、「トリオ・コンチェルタンテ」は半音階に基づいて書かれています。実際、当初本作品に付けた仮称は、この半音階主義を反映していました。様々な半音階的な華やかさに加え、すべてが半音階から構成される重要な旋律が含まれています。Presto agitatoは、低音の半音階から成るパッサカリアのようで、第3部の主旋律は、アルトの半音階を中心に成り立っています。しかし、結局は、本作の協奏曲的な要素を踏まえて「トリオ・コンチェルタンテ」と名付けました。即ち、3つの楽器それぞれに、相当な技巧を要する旋律が曲中にあり、Presto agitatoはピアノ協奏曲としての起源から、本作ではピアノ対弦楽器のモチーフとして聞こえます。さらに、言うまでもなく、19世紀の素晴らしいバイオリン協奏曲の数々にインスパイアされたバイオリンのカデンツァも含まれています。なお、「トリオ・コンチェルタンテ」は、シューベルト（1797-1828）からショスタコーヴィチ（1906-1975）に至るまでの多くの作曲家の影響を受けた、新ロマン主義的な作品として構想されただけではありません。本作は、3人のソリストがその技術的・叙情的才能を遺憾なく発揮するべく「演奏家のための作品」という意図を持って書かれた側面も持っているのです。

「トリオ・コンチェルタンテ」は極めて個人的な作品です。バイオリンとチェロが奏でる冒頭の旋律は、私の音楽的な署名であるS（Eフラット）-E-A-ton（1音上げる）であり、本作が自伝的な性質を持っていることを示しています。この他にも、本作を書くに当たってインスピレーションを与えた出来事が、作品中に暗号化された形で散りばめられています。しかし、こうした出来事については、音楽の中だけで語ることにしておきましょう。究極的には、本作品を聴いてくださる皆さんご自身の人生の中で、乗り越えてきた苦悩、下さなければならなかった決断、そして―時として後悔の念が残るとしても―人生を前向きに歩んで行くという決意、といったものを、本作品の中に見出されることを願っています。
