String Quartet in C（弦楽四重奏曲 ハ長調）は、世界がCovid-19のパンデミックに見舞われていた2020年8月から2021年3月にかけて作曲されました。全4楽章の調性はハ長調かハ短調であることから、ハ即ち「C」が主音であり、これは同時にコロナ（Corona）の略字という意味も含んでいます。String Quartet in Cは叙情的でロマンティックな曲調を基本としながらも、根底には不安と混乱のニュアンスが含まれています。本作は、Covid-19の感染やこれによる死亡のニュースが連日報道され、ソーシャル・ディスタンスを保つために家族や友人、同僚と集まることができない状況下で書かれました。
しかしながら、String Quartet in Cはパンデミックそのものについて書かれたものではなく、作品に通じるテーマは「家」だといえます。パンデミック下で、我々は「ステイ・ホーム」を求められました。この結果として、家や家族、そして、より広範な社会と我々の繋がりについて考える機会となりました。第1楽章のモデラートは、心の中やオンラインで訪れることが可能ながらも、実際には訪れることができない、遠くにある家に対する郷愁に満ちています。第2楽章のアレグロは、大都会の人間味のない生活や喧騒の中にある、穏やかな親しみを抱く場所としての家を描いています。第3楽章のレントとメスト（緩やかに、そして悲しそうに）は、パンデミック下で、愛する人―特に、パンデミック後では二度と再会することが叶わない相手―が待つ家を訪れられないことを悼んでいます。最終楽章のアレグロ・ジョコーソ（生き生きと愉快に）では、対照的な活動―（テレ）ワーク、勉学、遊び、休息、そして苛立たしい隔離―の拠点として家を位置づけています。前の3楽章の題材が再現され、4楽章は明るいハ長調で結ばれます。このような先の見えない状況の中でも、我々は希望を持ち続けなければなりません。
String Quartet in Cは調布国際音楽祭（2021）のミュージックサロンでの演奏のために書かれました。このため、Cは、曲のライトモティーフの一つである「調布」にも因んでいます。第2楽章の冒頭は、ユニゾンのC – H（Bナチュラル）– O（1オクターブ上）– F – U（1音上）となっています。本作では、このような「家」と結びついたライトモティーフが、コードで数多く表現されています。本作は、非常に個人的な作品として仕上がりましたが、この困難な時代を反映した作品として多くの方の心に響くものとなり、また、「コロナと共に」生きることを学ぶ上で、慰めと勇気を与える存在となることを願っています。

渡邊 田鶴野（Viola）国立音楽大学卒業。桐朋オーケストラアカデミー修了。プラムスクァルテット第一ヴァイオリン奏者。
富永 佐恵子（Cello）桐朋学園大学卒業後、明治安田生命クオリティオブライフ文化財団奨学生としてジュリアード音楽院卒業。

String Quartet in C was composed between August 2020 and March 2021, when the world was in the grip of the Covid-19 pandemic. While the home key of all four movements is either C major or C minor, the “C”, therefore, also half stands for “Corona”. While often lyrical and romantic in style, String Quartet in C has undertones of anxiety and disorientation. It was written against the backdrop of daily news about Covid infection rates and deaths, and while social distancing prevented meeting up with family, friends and colleagues.
However, rather than being about the pandemic per se, the theme that runs throughout String Quartet in C is “home”. During the pandemic we have been required to “stay home”. Consequently, it has been an opportunity to reflect on the meanings of home, family, and our connections to wider society. The first movement, Moderato, is full of nostalgia for a distant home that cannot be visited in person, but only in the mind or online. The second movement, Allegro, is about home as a place of peaceful familiarity amidst the impersonal hustle and bustle of life in the big city. The third movement, Lento e mesto, mourns our inability to visit the homes of loved ones during the pandemic, especially those who we will not have a chance to see again after the pandemic has passed. The final movement, Allegro giocoso, has the home as a hub of contrasting activities – (tele)work, study, play, rest, and frustrated isolation – and recapitulates material from all three previous movements. The ending in C major is a statement of optimism. Even amidst such uncertainty about where the pandemic will take us, we must remain hopeful about whatever comes next.
String Quartet in C was written for performance at the Music Salon event of the 2021 Chofu International Music Festival. The “C”, therefore, also refers to “Chofu”, which is a leitmotif in the piece. The second movement opens with a unison C – H (B natural) – O (up an octave) – F – U (up a tone). The quartet is full of such coded leitmotifs linked with “home”. The result is a deeply personal piece, but one which I also hope will resonate with many people as a piece reflecting our difficult times, and give comfort and courage as we learn to live “with Corona”.
Quartetto Bel tono x Philip Seaton
Narihara Kanade (Violin 1). A graduate of Toho Gakuen College, Kanade Narihara has attended various masterclasses including at the Liszt Academy in Hungary and Shion International Music Festival. She is first violin of the Quartetto Presta. Website.
Tomonaga Yuko (Violin 2). A graduate of Toho Gakuen College, Yuko Tomonaga has participated in the Tanglewood Festival. She is currently a teacher in the Toho Gakuen Music School for Children.
Watanabe Tazuno (Viola). A graduate of Kunitachi College of Music, Tazuno Watanabe also attended the Toho Orchestra Academy. She is first violin of the Plums Quartet.
Tominaga Saeko (Cello). After graduating from Toho Gakuen College, Saeko Tominaga graduated from the Juilliard School of Music on a Meiji Yasuda Quality of Life Foundation scholarship.
