I have never been a big fan of social media. However, it is an essential tool for musicians in the digital age. I have taken the plunge and added Bluesky to my online presence. It seems to be a streamlined, safer, and user-friendly version of ‘the others’. I hope it does not go down the problematic road ‘the others’ have taken: algorithms that push posts/ads I really do not want to be seeing into my feed, a toxic culture of online insults and harassment, and a constant sense of being monitored so that someone can send me targeted ads.

I have only just joined, but so far it has been a nice place to encounter some new music and new people. I will continue to use the Facebook account, but I sense that Bluesky will be where I connect more with people outside Japan, and Facebook will be more for people in Japan. We shall see.

私はもともと、ソーシャル・メディアというものがあまり好きではありません。しかし、デジタル時代の音楽家にとって、不可欠なツールであることは確かです。私は思い切って、Blueskyを自分のオンラインプレゼンスに加えることにしました。Blueskyは、「その他」のソーシャル・メディアに比べて、より簡素化された、安全で、ユーザーフレンドリーなツールのように思われました。私が見たくもないような投稿や広告をフィードに押し込んでくるアルゴリズムや、オンライン上の侮辱や嫌がらせといった有害な慣習、ターゲット広告を送るために常に誰かに監視されているという感覚など、「その他」のソーシャル・メディアが辿ってきた問題だらけの道を歩まないことを願っています。

私はBlueskyをまだ始めたばかりですが、これまでのところ、新しい音楽や人々と出会える素敵な場となっています。Facebookのアカウントも使い続けるつもりですが、Blueskyは海外の人々と繋がる場所になり、Facebookは日本の方向けのものになっていくような気がしています。
